Well this year started great. After going to bed at 8:30 on 12/31/2008, I awoke at 11:58 PM to enjoy Times Square on TV with Kathy and Rebecca. It looked cold in NYC.

New Year's day included a very funny e-mail from David - just as I was thinking about how I can be more supportive of others, David writes me a hilarious e-mail suggesting that we are in the cranky old men demographic. Once again, David has combined a good idea with humor and great timing. I believe that when my father relinquishes his title as president of the cranky old man club, I will become the next president! Of course, I will only accept this position if D.R. agrees to be my V.P. What a team we will be. Speaking of which, I just realized that David is subliminally responsible for the title of this blog - now I know who is responsible for my actions.
(David e-mail:
Hi Fran,

Happy New Year! Time to crawl out of the bunker and greet the new year. It has to be better than the last one.

Life is pretty good for us, with enough cash to cover frills like heat and electricity and necessities like golf clubs. I actually got a pretty sweet deal on a couple of clubs yesterday. Motivated sellers can be good things.

We are in Hilton Head for a few weeks. The weather has been sunny and warm until today. We aren't missing snow and cold at all. Every day we have to check the Boston weather so we can tell each other that we are glad we aren't in it.

I must be adjusting to my new Southern surroundings. Instead of watching the ball drop on New Year's Eve, I watched the Carolina basketball game on ESPN. Wild times.

Have you seen the new Clint Eastwood movie? I haven't yet, but from the trailers it looks like he is playing to our demographic, cranky old men telling kids to keep off the lawn. I'm getting my fill of cranky old men from golf. I get to be the voice of reason. Didn't see that coming.

Hope everything is well with you and yours.

David)

My new year's resolution is to network better in order to help myself to the great ideas of others. Toward this end, today I complemented Rebecca on her wonderful blog (bkf10.blogspot.com), ask her to draw me a new bee label, and show me how to set up a blog. So far, so good - it's only Jan. 2 and already I am insuring that I have no time to pursue gainful employment.
